How to create a luxury interior: advice from interior designer Nathalie

For Interior Interviews, I interview the founders of the most beautiful interior accounts. I ask them about their story, interior styling tips, sources of inspiration, and more. In this edition, I interview Nathalie from @maison_au_nouveau_port. Her home can be described as colorful chic. With elegant elements she created a very luxurious feeling. The colors and soft materials still keep it very cozy and welcoming. Read further to find out her tips on how to add more luxury to your home too.

How did you start your account?

Due to my work as an interior designer, I was often asked for my portfolio. This is how I got the idea to share my most beautiful pictures of projects, but also my own interior and texts. In this way, everyone can see in one overview what I have done, but also who I am as a person. I see it as a mood board of myself and my greatest passion: interior. And the fact that very nice friendships and conversations have now arisen is an absolute bonus!

What a cool interior style you have! How would you describe the style?

What a nice compliment, thank you! I like houses that are inspiring and have a story. An interior only comes alive for me after the addition of color and personal items. That resulted in a mix between modern design and the elegant elements of a canal house. If I had to label the style, Midcentury Modern would be the closest, although I think Colorful Parisian Chic might fit better!

Love the wall ornaments at your home! Did you add them yourself or was it already part of the house? If so, do you have a tip for others who also want such wall ornaments?

Yay it’s cool! We are also so happy with it. This house was very outdated and full of wooden slats, so no, they were definitely not part of it. To break the 12-meter-long wall and bring back the feeling of a canal house, I made a 3D design. In that way, I knew exactly how I wanted the surface division and what suited the layout of the house. After this, we went to Het Schippertje in Harderwijk to find the right ornaments. We already knew that we didn’t want to work with wallpaper, so we went for real eye-catchers so that the space needed little else and at the same time it would distinguish itself more from the frames that you see often. We had an instant crush on the decorated corner ornaments.

Your house also looks very luxurious! What are your tips for that?

Another nice compliment, it almost makes me shy! First of all, luxury is often found in the mix of fabrics. Think of the gloss of silk together with the hint of velvet, a large deep pile carpet in which you can almost lose your feet, but also have the courage to choose for large items. Stick to a fixed color palette so that you can use this as a common thread. This keeps an interior calm and in balance. But above all, stay close to yourself. Your interior should be the translation of your personality. Does an item or color simply make you happy? Go for it! It’s a process, enjoy it!

Where do you get inspiration from?

Good question! I am really an emotional person so I first get inspiration from, yes, feeling! For example, a painting handmade by my mother-in-law was the first inspiration for my color palette. And so an interior was created that makes me genuinely happy, every day.
On Instagram, I get inspired by accounts such as @atelier.nd.interior, @theobert_pot, and @nicolinebeerkens (and so many more). Colorful, daring and slightly different. I can also be inspired by shop windows with clothes, when having a colorful salad on a terrace or the sky with the sunset. In short, inspiration is all around us. Sometimes you just have to look at the world with different eyes.
